About Us

     IACLAM brings together national and regional Colleges of Laboratory Animal Medicine. IACLAM provides a common platform at the global level for communication by, and representation of, these Colleges and their Diplomates.

     Currently, there are five full member colleges and one Associate Member College. The five Full Member Colleges are the American College of Laboratory Animal Medicine (ACLAM), the European College of Laboratory Animal Medicine (ECLAM), the Indian College of Laboratory Animal Medicine (ICLAM), the Japanese College of Laboratory Animal Medicine (JCLAM) and the Korean College of Laboratory Animal Medicine (KCLAM). The Philippine College of Laboratory Animal Medicine (PCLAM) has joined IACLAM as an Associate Member College in 2022. Should other Colleges of laboratory Animal Medicine be established elsewhere in the world, they can be considered for membership in IACLAM.

     IACLAM assists achieving the shared objectives of all these laboratory animal medicine specialty organizations to promote the welfare and responsible use of laboratory animals through the certification of veterinary specialists, education, the dissemination of information relevant to the field, and serving as research partners.

     IACLAM is an association of associations, specifically the member Colleges of laboratory animal medicine. Appointed representatives of these Colleges serve on the IACLAM Board. IACLAM is an associate member of the World Veterinary Association (WVA).

     In 2020, IACLAM developed a strategic plan to guide the IACLAM BOD over the next four to five years. IACLAM made such tremendous progress on the 2020 plan that an updated strategic plan was developed in 2023.

    A workshop planning committee will be convened by the National Academies to explore topics of interest related to potential, future updates to the Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals (the Guide, 8th edition, NRC 2011). The workshop will build upon listening sessions that the Standing Committee for the Care and Use of Animals in Research (Standing Committee) held during the past year as it has explored various themes to inform future updates or revisions to the Guide.....

    Join us to learn about major international initiatives to promote the use of Home Cage Monitoring (HCM) as an important tool in behavioral studies and join the discussion on the evaluation of current opportunities and feasibility of HCM as a novel and complementary tool in behavioral phenotyping with particular attention to its feasibility in terms of data/video handling and analysis.

    There is no registration fee for the workshop, but you need to register in advance to join.

    The workshop should be of interest to researchers, clinicians, data analysts and welfare officers.

  • CALAS/ACSAL Annual Symposium

    The Annual Symposium of CALAS/ACSAL is taking place from 6th to 9sth May, 2023, in Montreal, Quebec at the Hotel Bonaventure Montreal.

    The theme for the Annual Symposium is "Over 6 Decades Making a Difference",

    The Symposium is a unique 2-day event, 2 dedicated days of programming with networking and social events, a Trade Show consisting of 50+ exhibit booths, dedicated Trainers' Lunch, 2 Keynote presentations from highly sought-after speakers, over 30 concurrent sessions and optional 2 full days of pre-symposium hands-on workshops. The Symposium regularly attracts 300 - 500 participants from across Canada and internationally.

Laboratory Animal Veterinarian

Laboratory animals are distinguished from other animals by their intended use in research, teaching, or testing and in some cases, because they possess specialized anatomic, genetic, physiologic or metabolic conditions that differ from other members of the same species. While the term "laboratory animals" could potentially include a wide range of wild and domestic species used for food or fiber production or kept as pets, in practice, the term is generally applied to those animals with a defined health and genetic status and usually purpose-bred for their intended uses in research.

Laboratory animal veterinarians are those veterinary professionals who by virtue of interest, experience, and training have specialized in the care of laboratory animals. While basic veterinary education imparts some of these specialized skills and information necessary to care for laboratory animals, the diversity and complexity of the laboratory environment, and the species used within that environment requires additional experience and training. Veterinarians undertaking the practice of laboratory animal medicine may demonstrate their competency by becoming certified by an established group of specialists (also referred to as a college of laboratory animal medicine), which have set forth specific skills and knowledge that each member (diplomate) possesses. Thus, colleges are groups of specialists in veterinary medicine with demonstrated competency in their specialty by training, experience, research, and publication, and a demonstrable knowledge and skill set that allows them to successfully complete an examination process developed and administered by their peers. Independent colleges of laboratory animal medicine exist on a country or a limited regional basis. Each college has members that, in addition to their demonstrated proficiency in laboratory animal medicine, also possess subspecialization in a variety of areas that have direct bearing on the care, use and welfare of laboratory animals.
